Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?" And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you. . "For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. "And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilence’s, and earthquakes in various places. "All these are the beginning of sorrows (Matthew 24:3-8).
One of the major birth pangs Jesus predicted would increase in frequency and intensity shortly before His return is earthquakes. Those who live in California are only too aware of the increase in earthquake activity in recent years.
But California is not the only place where earthquake activity has increased. There has been a destructive series of quakes in Armenia, Australia, Japan, China, India as well as California. The whole world has become conscious of the phenomena. Are there really more great quakes today than there were 100 years ago? Or are we just more aware of them because of better communications and tracking systems.
I think that it is important to point out that every culture from the earliest times have left records of earthquakes. They are such fearful, uncontrollable and unpredictable catastrophes that all peoples have remembered and recorded them from the earliest recorded history. So keeping track of quakes is not a recent phenomenon.
Let me give you some startling statistics:
*From 1890 to 1899, there was only one "killer" quake-6.0 or greater- recorded anywhere in the world.
*From 1900 to 1910, there were 3.
*From 1910 to 1920, there were 2.
*From 1920 to 1930, there were 2.
*From 1930 to 1940, there were 5.
*From 1940 to 1950, there were 4.
*From 1950 to 1960, there were 9.
*From 1960 to 1970, there were 13.
*From 1970 to 1979, there were 51.
*From 1980 to 1989, there were 86.
* And in the four years of the 1990’s there have already been more than 100.
