Mon Apr 15, 9:02 AM ET By Elaine Monaghan DAMASCUS (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell appealed to Lebanon and Syria on Monday to rein in Hizbollah guerrillas whose recent border attacks against Israel he said threatened to escalate into a regional conflict. Powell made the call after meeting Lebanese President Emile Lahoud in Beirut during a one-day sidetrip from Jerusalem where he has so far been stymied in his efforts to broker a ceasefire between warring Israelis and Palestinians. Powell later flew to Damascus where he held 80 minutes of talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose country is the main power broker in Lebanon. In Beirut, he was greeted with chants of "Death to America" by thousands of Lebanese Hizbollah supporters. "There is a very real danger of the situation along the border widening the conflict in the region," said Powell, on a mission to end 18 months of Israeli-Palestinian violence. He ventured past Israeli tanks on Sunday to Yasser Arafat's bullet-pocked headquarters in Ramallah in the West Bank to meet the Palestinian leader and later held more talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Powell's talks with Arafat failed to yield agreement on a ceasefire that the Palestinians say must start with an Israeli withdrawal. Israel says it will only pull out once it uproots the "terror infrastructure" in the West Bank. Once again, Powell came away from his talks with Sharon without a commitment to comply with U.S. President George W. Bush's demand for an immediate end to its crushing 17-day-old West Bank offensive launched after a wave of suicide bombings. END Recently I have seen a little defiance of the nations coming out towards the U.S. Many countries are just flat saying no to U.S. demands. I feel that they will eventually have to look for help from the European Union to defuse this situation in the Middle East. Personally, I don't believe that we will see a regional war until Russia and the Arab nations attack Israel. That will probably happen during the tribulation period. Marwan Barghouti, who is a high ranking militia leader for Yassar Arafat, has been captured by Israeli forces. He has been linked as the mastermind of the homicide bombings. Although he should be brought to justice, this will further inflame the situation in the Middle East. We could see further homicide bombings in retaliation for this capture. Pastor Malone
