BETHLEHEM,
West Bank: Israel began
withdrawing Monday night from Bethlehem, ending its patrols there, as part of an
agreement to hand over the West Bank town to Palestinian security control,
Israel Radio said.
The
agreement to hand over Bethlehem, along with the Gaza Strip, to the
Palestinians, was meant as a test case for further transfers of authority in the
West Bank.
Residents
said that the Israeli-imposed curfew was still in effect in the town, though
Israel Radio and Israel Army radio both reported that Israeli forces were no
longer on patrol there.
The
agreement, reached Sunday in Tel Aviv by the Israeli defense minister, Binyamin
Ben-Eliezer, and his Palestinian counterpart, Interior Minister Abdel Razak
Yehiyeh, was the first security agreement the two sides have reached without
U.S. mediation in almost two years of fighting.
If
the Palestinians are able to prevent militants from attacking Israel, the
Israelis say they will pull back from other Palestinian cities and towns in the
West Bank. However, the violent Hamas and Islamic Jihad groups, which have been
responsible for most suicide attacks against Israelis, have rejected the
agreement and are pledging to step up their attacks against Israel.
The
new agreement was in effect a pilot plan for further moves toward a full
cease-fire.
The
steps are essential as a starting point for the future political and security
process," Ben-Eliezer said in a statement. He told Israeli Army Radio,
"The talks are aimed at getting a cease-fire and reducing tension." END
This
is only a pullout that may lead to a ceasefire.
It’s certainly no peace agreement but I do feel that it is the first
step to the eventual peace plan, but that will be orchestrated by the EU.
One
of two things will come of this pullout…more of the same (homicide bombings)
or a road to real peace.
To
tell you the truth I see progress, but I am not convinced that this will be the
road to peace, although, I welcome it if it is.
I still believe that things are going to get worse before they get better
and then the antichrist will come on the scene and make peace a reality. It’s
just not within the scope of the Israeli’s and Palestinians to bring about
peace on their own terms nor is it God’s will.
