A new Israeli army operation against West Bank militants is looming after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his new defence minister visited the kibbutz where a gunman killed five people.

Israeli security sources quoted by Reuters news agency said an operation would be launched soon in the Nablus area of the West Bank, from where the fugitive gunman is believed to have come.

Tulkarm - another northern West Bank city - was also named as a possible target for military action. Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz - who has spearheaded Israel's crackdown in the West Bank - met army commanders before visiting Kibbutz Metzer with Mr Sharon.

A mother and her two young boys were among the five people killed by the lone gunman. Mr Sharon is under pressure to take strong action after the new foreign minister, Binyamin Netanyahu - who is challenging him for leadership of the right-wing Likud Party - repeated his call for Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to be exiled. END

If Binyamin Netanyahu is elected Prime Minister in 2003, it will be very interesting to see if he follows through with his call to exile Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Talk about opening up a whole new can of worms, but I must admit, his banishment is way overdue.

Personally, I would have driven him out after the first suicide bombing, but I realize how big a part the international community plays on these decisions. This will be a very bold move for Israel if they decide to finally rid themselves of Arafat.

If that happens the future is very uncertain for Israel. First of all, they open themselves up to world condemnation and further isolation. Economic sanctions would be a certainty. The E.U. is the recipient of 25% of Israel's exports and is a major contributor to Palestine. They may take their business elsewhere.

I'm not sure the U.S. will stand behind such a drastic move. If Israel refuses to listen to the U.S. they may wash their hands of the situation and begin to distance themselves.

The Arab world is dead set against anyone other than Yasser Arafat leading the Palestinian people. This could open Israel up to a major attack. Eventually, Israel will be attacked; this could be the spark that sets the region on fire. Of course, Arab leaders could be convinced by a dynamic leader that Palestine doesn't need Arafat to become a nation.

Binyamin Netanyahu will definitely bring a new direction for Israel if elected.
