The Israeli media reported Monday that Israel's army chief
advocated the ousting of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and said most Israeli
settlements would eventually have to be evacuated. Military officials quickly
denied the reports.
Palestinians in a car near Gaza City Sunday narrowly escaped an
Israeli helicopter missile attack on their vehicle, blasted into a heap of
smoldering metal seconds after they jumped out, witnesses said.
The Russian and Chinese presidents appealed Monday to North
Korea and the United States to stick to a 1994 agreement for the North to give
up it nuclear weapons program in exchange for foreign energy aid.
Russia said Monday it was expelling two Swedish diplomats, in a
clear tit-for-tat response to Stockholm's expulsion last month of two Russian
