The meeting in London is aimed at supporting reforms to the Palestinian
Authority and advancing the Middle East peace process.
The United States Tuesday welcomed a British proposal to bring
Palestinian delegates to a conference on Palestinian reform in January, saying
it could complement the work of Middle East mediators.
The European Union's foreign policy chief on Tuesday lamented
the lack of progress by Middle East mediators and said he longed for an American
partner to help work on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon sought on Tuesday to contain
a bribery scandal that threatens to turn voters away from his Likud party and
vowed Likud would win a general election in January.

Wednesday that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat should step down if he is unable

said Israelis should see the plan before they cast their ballots.

The United States and Israel appeared to be in no hurry to push
ahead with a new Middle East peace plan as Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
accepted a British invitation to send a delegation to London for talks on peace
next month.
Egypt urged the United States on Monday to quickly lay out its
so-called "roadmap" for establishing a Palestinian state, saying
Washington should not delay the plan until after Israeli and Palestinian
elections next month.
