Clergyman Urges Arafat on Peace (Associated
Press) U.S.,
EU Disagree on Timing Middle East Peace Plan (Reuters) Comments
The January Israeli elections will prove to be a telltale sign of how close we are to peace in the Middle East. Both sides are talking peace and the prospective leaders are being forced to face the fact that peace maybe in the best interest of everyone involved despite what opposition groups do. I am still convinced that a multinational peacekeeping force will have to be brought in to make it happen. It will have to be a powerful force and a force that is recognized by the world.
Will peace come in 2003? That's hard to say but if Amram Mitzna is elected start paying close attention to his direction. He's already determined that he would pull troops out of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and begin negotiations with the Palestinians. He also has made statements that he might move Israeli settlers out of the occupied areas. Even though Sharon is the frontrunner, what will happen over the next few weeks may change everything. The highest-ranking Roman Catholic clergyman in the Holy Land
said Wednesday that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat should step down if he is
unable to make peace with Israel, and urged worshippers blocked from traveling
on Christmas Eve to pray at Israeli army checkpoints.
The United States on Wednesday proposed putting off a Middle
East peace plan until after Israelis vote in January, while the European Union
said Israelis should see the plan before they cast their ballots.
Israeli troops forcibly removed an outpost in Hebron Thursday
which Jewish settlers erected to stake a claim to land near the site of a
Palestinian attack which killed 12 settlers and security men.
