Syria
Says Ready to Fight if Israel Attacks Again
JERUSALEM/MADRID (Reuters) - Syria's ambassador to Spain said on Wednesday
Damascus would respond militarily against Israel if the Jewish state carried out
new attacks on Syrian territory.
A senior Israeli security source swiftly dismissed the threat, saying Israel did not want to escalate tensions and believed Syria did not want to start a war. The source said the envoy's statement was mainly intended to impress the Arab world.
But the comments increased tensions simmering since Israel carried out an air strike on Sunday on what it said was a training camp for Palestinian militants near Damascus, one day after a Palestinian suicide bombing killed 19 people in Israel.
Syria says the target was a civilian site and has said it has the right to defend itself.
Israel's
Military Declares Alert In North
TEL AVIV [MENL] -- Israel has placed its military on alert along the borders of
Israel and Syria.
The military alert was ordered on Monday in wake of two attacks by Hizbullah along Israel's border with Lebanon in which an Israeli soldier was killed. Hizbullah launched automatic weapon, rocket and mortar fire toward Israeli military posts along the Israeli border on Monday and early Tuesday in what officials deemed retaliation for an Israeli air strike on a Palestinian training base near Damascus.
Comments
I don't see Syria
attacking or retaliating against Israel. No yet anyway. It will
come, but not until the peace accord is signed. This could be a catalyst
to hurry that along.
This is a big development but we will have to wait and see where this leads.
