NATO Chief: We Could Send Troops Once Treaty Is Signed
NATO would consider stationing peacekeeping troops here to facilitate the peace process only if an Israeli-Palestinian peace treaty were signed, both sides requested a NATO presence, and the UN Security Council endorsed the request, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said in an interview with Haaretz yesterday.

Hamas Plans To Torpedo Ceasefire
TEL AVIV [MENL] -- Israel's military has concluded that Hamas seeks to torpedo the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Israeli military sources said military intelligence has obtained information of Hamas plans to carry out suicide strikes to shatter the ceasefire declared in February 2004. The sources said the Hamas plans stem from operatives in the northern West Bank.

U.S. Begins To Hand Over Command To Iraqi Forces
BAGHDAD [MENL] -- The U.S. military has begun to transfer authority to Iraqi security forces.

Officials said the U.S.-led coalition has been quietly handing over the command to Iraq's military and security units in the four most violent provinces in the country. Fourteen of the 18 provinces have already been under Iraqi security control.

In the latest move, the U.S. military has transferred control to the Iraq Army in Baghdad. The U.S. Army's First Cavalry Division has handed over authority in several areas to Baghdad to the Iraq Army's 40th Brigade.

U.S. Congress Moves Against Iran
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The U.S. Congress has decided to support efforts to overthrow the Islamic regime in Iran.

A bill has been introduced in the Senate that would support the opposition in Iran. The legislation, termed the Iran Freedom and Support Act, would require that the United States work to ensure a referendum in Iran on the type of regime sought by the people.

Comments
NATO has said that they would consider sending peacekeeping troops to both Israel and Palestine once a peace treaty has been signed.  This is something I have anticipated for years but felt that the U.N. would be the first to step up.  In time that may still happen.

But not so fast!  Israeli intelligence has received information that Hamas plans to continue its suicide bombing campaign in an attempt to disrupt the peace process.  Anything is possible, but I don't see this derailing the process.  They've gone too far and there's too much at stake for all involved.

Here's something else in the news that I feel is of prophetic interest.  A military alliance between Egypt and Turkey is in the beginning stages.  If you're a regular reader of mine you know that I believe Egypt and Turkey will take part in the surprise attack against Israel by the Russian-Arab Alliance (Ezekiel 38 & 39).  As you know Russia already has an alliance with practically the entire Arab world.

Turkey has attempted to gain E.U. membership for years.  The E.U. has made promise after promise, but have failed to deliver.  I wouldn't hold my breath on them ever becoming a member, but in time they will integrate deeper into the Russian-Arab Alliance.

The U.S. is starting to loosen its grip on Iraq and have begun to turn over power little by little to the Iraqi military.  This is good news for everyone involved, but I doubt coalition troops will ever leave for good.  Strategically, the U.S. needs this position to fight terrorism and maintain a healthy balance in the region.

Keep your eyes on the peace process to see if NATO and/or UN troops are invited into the region.
