Question

Dear Pastor Malone:

What do you think about the Y2K computer bug everyone is talking about. Should we be worried, and is this a part of prophecy?

Answer

Dear Kelly:

Remember back in the early 90s when everyone was scared to death of a virus called Michael Angelo. The story was, if you had your computer running on a certain day you would catch this dreaded virus. This created a virus scare, and guess what, the computer virus industry became a booming business over night. I'm not saying that the Y2K bug is the equivalent of the Michael Angelo virus. I do believe it is made up of the same hype, but on a much greater scale. Is there a reason to worry? I don't believe there is! Here's an article I read off the internet that I believe sums up my thoughts on Y2K.

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. (Wireless Flash) - If you're worried about the impending chaos that will be caused by the Y2K computer glitch, you can sigh a breath of relief. The media has got it wrong once again. That's the word from former IBM computer programmer Alan Wallach, who says the Y2K bug will have little effect in the new millennium.

Wallach should know - he's one of the programmers who, back in the '60s, created the troublesome computer programs that used only two digits to reflect the current year.

He blames the current crisis on computer consultants who are exaggerating the problem so they can rake in the dough from clueless customers.

The computer programmer says any problems that arise on January 1, 2000, will have more to do with people becoming panicked and going off the deep end than with any computer systems failing. Wallach is the author of a new book called The Year 2000 Hoax (Safe Goods Press).

Does this problem have any connection with prophecy? I sincerely doubt it, but anything's possible! I think that most people believe that something major is going to happen the year 2000 and they are afraid this is it. Personally, I believe that the new millennium will come and go with few or any serious problems, and people will continue to live their live's as they always have. That's when the Lord will come, rapture the church, and shock the world. Should one prepare for the year 2000 bug just in case? Better to be prepared than not!

But here's the other side of the coin. This may turn out to be a worldwide catastrophy. Although it seems that the U.S. has Y2K under control (we may have some regional problems), much of the rest of the world is far, far behind. Many of the world governments admit openly that they see no possible way they will have this problem solved by the year 2000.

What does this mean? Many throughout the world will be without the basic necessities of modern life. Since many of the necessities such as electricity, heat, and running water are regulated by computers, normal operation maybe interrupted. World business and commerce would come to a streeching halt. Entire communities could be shutdown for long periods of time. Work stoppages could be widespread due to limited electrical power. Worldwide shipments of goods and parts will all but cease from most of the world. Stock markets from around the world could collapse sending a shock wave effect to the U.S. markets. Around the world, looting and other lawless activity could run rampant.

Since a large part of the U.S. economy is based on exports many will lose their jobs. The U.S. financial institutions will lose billions because of the massive amounts of money invested in foreign operations and other concerns. Small businesses will suffer the most in the U.S. With limited cash reserves many will go bankrupt when goods and parts are not shipped on time. Loan defaults will be the norm forcing financial institutions to go under. Many will lose their life savings and cash reserves held in banks. The magnitude of this bailout will be to great even for the U.S. government.

Due to the turmoil, many countries may see this as an opportune time to strike unprotected nations. War maybe at the brink in every corner of the world. The U.S. and other countries will try to maintain world order to no avail. There will just be too many fires to put out.

Just when there seems to be no hope of restoring world order, a man will come forward. This man will be brilliant and the world will stop and take notice. He will promise to solve all their problems, and for a short time, will do just that. He will rise to the pinnacle of power like no man has ever achieved in so much that many will think him to be a god. In the end, he will fall as swiftly as his rise.

Could this be a more likely scenario? Could the Y2K problem be bigger than we think? Could it be the lightening rod that brings forth the antichrist and thrust the world into the greatest time of tribulation ever known?

Only time will tell.
