Question

Dear sir:

Hello, my name is Steve and I have a question that I hope you can answer because it's really bugging me. You said in one of your articles "God told Noah that he was going to destroy the world with a flood in 120 years. He made no secret of that. He didn't tell them the day nor the hour. They knew after 120 years a flood would come and destroy the world. Guess what? After 120 years it came." I was interested in this so I looked it up and found something interesting out. The bible says in Gen.5:32 "After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth." So this means that Noah was 500 years old. Then it goes on to say in Gen 6:3 "Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years." This is what you were referring to as the 120 years, right? Well this means that after Noah was 500 years old, sometime after he was 500 God said this bit about 120 years. Noah could have been 565 years old or 501 years old, the point I'm trying to make is that Noah was older than 500 years when God said that mans days would be 120. Well, in Gen.7:6 the bible says "Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth." This is my problem. Noah was how old when the flood waters started.......600????? Ok, you do the math, Noah was more than 500 years old when God said that the flood would come in 120 years but when the flood came Noah was 600 years old?? That means at most only a hundred years had passed, not 120. This is confusing me and I know something is wrong. Could you please help me with any info you might have.

Thank you,

Steve

Answer

Dear Steve:

I must commend you on a very good question. But the answer is this. To make a long answer longer you stated The Bible says in Gen.5:32, "After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth." So this means that Noah was 500 years old. Then it goes on to say in Gen 6:3, "Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years." This is what you were referring to as the 120 years, right? Well this means that after Noah was 500 years old, sometime after he was 500 God said this bit about 120 years. Noah could have been 565 years old or 501 years old, the point I'm trying to make is that Noah was older than 500 years when God said that man's days would be 120. Well, in Gen.7:6 the bible says "Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth." This is my problem. Noah was how old when the flood waters started.......600? That means at most only a hundred years had passed, not 120. Unfortunately, you missed the other irregularities of that passage. The two middle verses you skipped over conceal the answer. Genesis 6:1 & 2 states, "Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose." These are the verses between when Noah had three sons and when God made the statement about man's mortality. Do you think that the sons of God began to look at the daughters of men right after Noah had his three sons. Neither do I! These verses are obviously not meant to be time sequential. Yes, Noah was 500 years old when his three sons were born, but God's patience with man ran out twenty years prior to that, and there's no telling how long man was living in blatant immorality before God declared this 120 year time limit. The correct sequence of time would be man living in sin for possibly hundreds of years. God then declares that in 120 years He will destroy the world. 20 years later Noah has 3 sons at the age of 500. 100 years later Noah and his family enter the ark for the last time.
