Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced today that he is not only opened to
the Saudi peace initiative but welcomes it with open arms.
"I'm ready to accept the Saudi initiative as a basis for discussions with the Palestinians together with the Saudis," he said.
"The essence of what King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia said is that the conflict between Israel and the Arab countries, particularly the Palestinians, must be resolved in a peaceful manner.
"At the end of the process not just the Palestinians, but all the Arab countries will have to recognise the state of Israel." http://www.abc.net.au/news/indepth/featureitems/s1899732.htm
This is a major about-face for the state of Israel. There's no question that the US is behind this sudden change of heart.
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates was in Jordan today to talk with King Abdullah II about Iran and the Arab-Israeli peace process. Although their conversation touched on many aspects of the Middle East, King Abdullah II spent much of his time pushing the Saudi peace plan and the importance of the two state solution. The issue "remains the core conflict in the region and international and regional actors should make the establishment of an independent Palestinian state a priority in order to realise regional peace and stability". http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070417/pl_afp/mideastusgatesjordan_070417160909
Elsewhere in the Middle East, Syrian Information Minister Muhsen Bilal said, "If Israel rejects the Arab League peace proposal, resistance will be the only way to liberate the Golan Heights."
"Syria wants to reach a fair, comprehensive peace," he added. However, he also stated that "any nation living under occupation has the prerogative to resist. In Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq, we must liberate all occupied Arab land." http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3388684,00.html
There is no question in my mind that very soon there will either be major peace or a major war in the Middle East.
It would not surprise me if Israeli Prime Minister Olmert gave in to this false security of peace that the US and the Islamic world is presenting. This would be the perfect scenario the Islamic world has been dreaming about for years, but in the end, it will turn out to be a nightmare (Ezekiel 38 & 39).
It's hard to say what the final plan will look like. Personally, I don't think it will see a final conclusion before it all begins to unravel. But I would venture to guess that Israel will be forced into accepting the Saudi plan as is with the promise of continued negotiations on items such as Palestinian refugee right of return and the recognition of the Jewish state. This will immediately set the stage for creating a two-state solution with Israel giving back much of the West Bank and turning over East Jerusalem to be the capital of the Palestinian Authority. At some point, expect Israel to compromise with Syria on the Golan Heights. That decision may be made as soon as this summer.
Another major prophetic news alert also occurred today in the European Union...I should say potential prophetic news alert. Several leaders in the EU are saying that they don't need a Constitution but need only to manipulate existing treaties to form a European super state.
"I think people can identify very clearly the things that give rise to a European super-state that we do not want... and those things which are necessary to make Europe work more effectively," Mr Blair said, after talks in London.
He added: "There's all the difference in the world between a constitutional treaty that is an attempt to consolidate... to write all the rules of the European Union, to give rise to a whole new set of legal principles - and an amending treaty within the existing European treaties that makes the rules work more effectively." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6560397.stm
Amending treaties within the existing European treaties would expedite the bringing in of a strong European leader who would exercise much more influence on the world political scene than the present rotating leaders.
