As many of you have heard, UK international Airport Glasgow was struck with a
terrorist car bombing over the weekend. It is considered a foiled
terrorist bombing but many attribute good intelligence and just plain luck in
preventing this attack from turning into an international catastrophe. You
have to wonder how much longer our luck will hold out.
The US, UK, Germany and a whole host of countries around the world are on high alert in fear of news that terrorist chatter is up substantially. There is a fear that Al Qaeda is planning a summertime spectacular attack greater than 9/11. "This is reminiscent of the warnings and intelligence we were getting in the summer of 2001," the official told ABCNews.com. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=3336148 Although US intelligence has no credible evidence pointing to an eminent attack they are taking the signs very seriously period.
Another twist in the Tony Blair appointment as Mideast peace envoy for the quartet. Apparently, in his first days as envoy, he has come out publicly and said he would not adhere to the US-Israeli boycott of Hamas. In fact, it is being reported that one of his first tasks will be to establish contacts and rapport with Hamas representatives in both Gaza and Damascus.
This information was taken from a conversation with Russian officials to insure them that he was the right man for the job. Shortly after the conversation, Russia dropped their resistance to his appointment. US officials were said to be a bit concerned over these developments saying it was a complete reversal in the understanding Mr. Blair had with President Bush.
German chancellor Angela Merkel is also looking askance at the new Blair strategy. Thursday, June 28, she commented: “Tony Blair’s mandate as new Middle East envoy would be limited and he would report to the international Quartet, not the other way round.” http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=4362
Could this be the first signs that Mr. Blair has no intention of following the same US dictated roadmap that his predecessors have taken and failed? It will be interesting to see if Mr. Blair bends to the wishes of the US.
The months ahead are going to be very interesting indeed.
