A report by leading US intelligence agencies has
determined that it is highly unlikely that Iran will ever change its nuclear
ambitions and will continue causing problems in Iraq. This information
will be shared with US President Bush within a week.
Certainly, this report does not yield good news and could lead to a US led attack on Iranian nuclear sites. Many believe that this attack will take place toward the end of President Bush's term sometime in mid-2008.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Monday that Hezbollah now has more rockets than it had during the Second Lebanon War. In fact, the Lebanese army, who was instructed by the UN Security Council to prevent Hezbollah from re-arming themselves along Israel's northern border, has been helping them to get back to full strength.
Iran and Syria have concocted the perfect plan. Fight a proxy war against Israel on somebody else's land (Lebanon) and let Israel destroy that country's infrastructure. It worked perfect in 2006 where Israel sustained heavy damage and casualties from over 4000 incoming rockets.
Despite Israel's attempt to calm fears about a possible war with Syria, actions on both sides of the border have been speaking louder than their words. When war breaks out, it's likely that Syria will limit their end of the war to guerrilla tactics in the Golan Heights (avoiding a full-scale war) and give Hezbollah the green light to rain rockets down on Israeli towns.
If this happens, I hope Israel has the sense to attack the source... Syria (and Iran). Personally, I believe they will attack Syria, but probably not Iran...that may be left to the US. To what extent this war will go is hard to say, but I do believe there will be war in the Middle East within the next several months.
The US will be hosting a Middle East peace summit in November. What, if any impact this will have on peace talks is unknown. But as we have seen in the past, about the time peace looks to be making progress something always come on the scene to stop it in its tracks.
According to Israeli President Shimon Peres he believes peace is around the corner and has been dubbed a prophet by Israeli right-wing organizations after the following prediction he made 30 years ago was made public.
"The following is a chillingly accurate prediction
made three decades ago, by none other than Shimon Peres, the nation's newly
elected president. In it he foresaw, in precise detail, the dire perils that
would result if Israel were to embark on precisely the policy he himself
championed and which continues to advocate with passion:"
'The establishment of such a [Palestinian] state means the inflow of
combat-ready Palestinian forces (more than 25,800 men under arms) into Judea and
Samaria; this force, together with the local youth, will double itself in a
short time. It will not be short of weapons or other [military] equipment, and
in a short space of time, an infrastructure for waging war will be set up in
Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip. Israel will have problems in preserving
day-to-day security, which may drive the country into war, or undermine the
morale of its citizens. In time of war, the frontiers of the Palestinian state
will constitute an excellent staging point for mobile forces to mount attacks on
infrastructure installations vital for Israel's existence, to impede the freedom
of action of the Israeli air-force in the skies over Israel, and to cause
bloodshed among the population. In areas adjacent to the frontier-line.' Shimon
Peres, Tomorrow is Now, Jerusalem: Keter, 1978, p. 232." http://web.israelinsider.com/Articles/Politics/11931.htm
Certainly, President Peres has made a stunning about-face in these last days.
