Netanyahu concedes to Palestinian state; Conditions include recognition of Israel, demilitarization of new nation
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave his much anticipated speech today. It was to address where his administration stood on Middle East peace and the creation of a Palestinian state. As expected, Mr. Netanyahu did endorse the creation of a Palestinian state but with preconditions. They must recognize Israel as a Jewish nation and the new state must be totally demilitarized.
"If we get this guarantee for demilitarization and necessary security arrangements for Israel, and if the Palestinians recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people, we will be willing in a real peace agreement to reach a solution of a demilitarized Palestinian state alongside the Jewish state," he said. Netanyahu also said that Jerusalem would remain Israel's undivided capital.
This did not go over well in the Arab world and especially with Palestinian Leader Abbas.
An aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told Ynet that speech "dealt a deadly blow to the peace process".
"Netanyahu's speech was a right-wing speech that destroyed the basis for negotiations when it talked of a unified Jerusalem, removing the refugee issue from the talks and recognizing a Jewish state. This is a speech that is about setting terms," he said.
"This will not lead to complete and just peace," Abu Rdainah said. "His remarks are not enough and will not lead to a solution." Ynetnews.com
Up to this point, the Obama administration has been patient toward Israel's foot dragging. I don't look for this to continue. If I am correct, look for Obama to start talking tough which will likely include reducing or cutting off military aid and threatening to withhold US veto power which would result in heavy UN sanctions against Israel.
Unfortunately, Abbas is correct, time is on his side. Eventually, Obama will either force Netanyahu to see things his way or force him out of office. Only time will tell which way Netanyahu will finally go, but if history is any indicator, he will give in to US pressure.
Bible prophecy does speak of a time when Israel will accept a peace proposal during the last days (Daniel 9:27). It also, speaks of a time when Israel will be dwelling safely within their own borders (Ezekiel 38:8, 11 & 14). Whether these two end-time events are one and the same is unknown. As we draw closer to the creation of a Palestinian state I have a hunch that we will find out the truth.
