Hamas: We won't stand in way of PA-Israel deal

Hamas political bureau chief Khaled Meshal told a Russian diplomat a few days ago that his group would not stand in the way of a peace deal brokered between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israel. Meshal reportedly told Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov in Damascus that if Abbas comes to an agreement on a final settlement of the conflict with Israel, and if the agreement is approved in a Palestinian referendum, Hamas would not try to derail such an accord.

Israel, for its part, has been unhappy about Russian contacts with high-ranking Hamas officials in the Syrian capital, and Israeli officials have expressed skepticism about Meshal's reported comments.  Haaretz.com

There are two things that catch my immediate attention about this story.  One, if it's true it's big news, but I would have to believe that Hamas has an ulterior motive.  It's more likely they are finally wising up and now see the creation of a Palestinian state as a future land grab.  Hamas' immediate goal is to defeat Fatah and run them out of the West Bank as they did in Gaza.  But taking over the West Bank by force might bring down the wrath of Israel and possibly the international community.  A better plan would be to allow a Palestinian state to be created, unify the government in name only, and have the Palestinian people legally vote in an Hamas dominated government as they did in Gaza.  Hamas will then have a massive eastern front to go with their present southern front.

The second thing that caught my attention, Russia is treating Hamas like a favored nation, and Israel, rightfully so, is very unhappy about their relationship.  What could Hamas possibly have to offer Russia?  This relationship with Hamas could serve to be a stepping off point for a future attack against Israel, especially if Hamas gains control of the West Bank.   Also, if you haven't heard, Russia is building bases in Syria.  These two partners will turn out to be key strategic players in Russia's future Middle East plan that will climax at the Battle of Gog and Magog (Ezekiel 38 & 39).

Israeli officials were furious on Wednesday after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton indicated that her government has reconciled itself to the idea of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, and shifted its focus to minimizing the damage caused by such a reality.

Speaking to reporters in Bangkok on Tuesday, Clinton said that Iran needs to "calculate what I think is a fair assessment: that if the United States extends a defense umbrella over the region, if we do even more to develop the military capacity of those (allies) in the Gulf, it is unlikely that Iran will be any stronger or safer" even if it has nuclear weapons.  Israel Today

I don't think there's any question that the US has given up on diplomacy and has resigned itself to accepting a nuclear Iran...and if the US has accepted a nuclear Iran, it is highly unlikely they will allow Israel to attack Iran.  The new direction for dealing with them will be in the deployment of advanced missile shields in the Middle East and Western Europe.  That certainly won't make Russia happy and could ultimately set off a war in the region.

According to Israel's Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren, the present rift with the US over settlements will be resolved soon.  He admits there are disagreements but nothing that can't be worked out.

"Here, we are talking about a very specific disagreement. There is a willingness on the part of the administration to resolve this. And I know as ambassador that the spectrum of constant contact is massive. We do not feel tension. There is no breakdown in the relationship," said Oren.

"We are dealing with this on all levels and we will reach an agreement with camaraderie and cooperation. We have no ally like the United States. It is a strong bond and I'm sure it will be resolved."  Jpost.com
