Netanyahu to U.S.: I'll free Fatah prisoners to boost Abbas
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to release hundreds of Fatah prisoners in a goodwill gesture to the Palestinian Authority. This gesture is seen as a move to get peace talks moving in the right direction again but they will start out at a lower level and indirect. Special U.S. Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, will apparently head up the talks and travel between Jerusalem and Ramallah relaying messages and developments between the two leaders. The US will conduct direct talks with Israel as a proxy for the Palestinian Authority.
Israel has agreed to this arrangement but it must also be agreed upon by the PA. Mitchell will be back in the Middle East in a few weeks to get Abbas' answer. Egyptian Leader Hosni Mubarak, who is working with the US to jumpstart this new approach, will pressure Abbas over the next few weeks in an attempt to get him to accept the proposal.
Meanwhile, Israeli Social Affairs Minister Isaac Herzog told a group of Palestinian professors in Jerusalem Wednesday that the PA leadership was misreading the current climate with the present Israeli coalition.
"You are not correctly reading the exceptional opportunity that exists
at this time," Herzog said.
"I believe that the leaders of a center-right government will go to a
historic settlement. Do not miss an opportunity again." Haaretz.com
I do believe a historic settlement is near but only the Lord knows for sure how near and when that time will come.
