Sarkozy, Abbas urge rapid renewal of Mideast peace talks
French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, called Monday for the rapid resumption of negotiations that will lead to a Palestinian state.
Following a meeting of the two leaders in Paris, Sarkozy said that he would work for the creation of "a modern, viable Palestinian state" which, like Israel, would have Jerusalem as its capital and which would be drawn up according to the borders of 1967. Haaretz.com
Speaking at a news conference in Paris, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and visiting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, called for a swift return to peace talks and the soon creation of a Palestinian state. Sarkozy, who has Jewish roots, and surprisingly a good relationship with Abbas, seems to be positioning himself to become the future lead negotiator for Middle East peace talks.
His relationship with Israel has also flourished over the last few years due to his pro-Israel stand. Back in June of 2008, during an official state visit, Mr. Sarkozy pledged his countries total support for Israel and condemned a nuclear Iran as "intolerable". "I ask you to trust us because we want to help you… France is ready to provide its guarantee, ready to mobilise its diplomatic service, its resources, its soldiers. You can trust France,” he said. French Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, said in an interview over the weekend that he would push for an initiative that would call for the EU to recognize a Palestinian state within 18 months regardless of the progress of the talks. But Sarkozy said such a move would be impractical without internationally recognized borders.
Abbas agreed with Sarkozy that a unilateral declaration of statehood would not be wise stating that any such move would first have to be endorsed by the EU and the US.
Keep an eye on Mr. Sarkozy... he could play a substantial role in these last days.
In other news, President Obama has his heart set on pulling the US economy down one trillion dollars at a time. Spending massive amounts of money without creating jobs will do that, and as a result, his approval rate has plummeted to new lows. Unfortunately for the global economy, the economic woes for the United States is only the beginning. Apparently, the European Union is in the middle of its own crisis over the Euro and some experts believe it may collapse if something isn't done fast.
As a student of Bible prophecy, I have to evaluate this potential world financial crisis in terms that it could be a gateway for a man to come on the scene and solve. Certainly, I don't know where this global meltdown will lead or how severe it might turn out to be, but it is something that we should all be aware of, especially in these last days.
