Obama starts massive US Air-Sea-Marine build-up opposite Iran; IDF preparing for mass evacuations in case of Hezbollah missile strike
According to intelligence website Debkafile, US President Barack Obama has begun a massive air, sea, and marine build-up in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf regions. By August, they are reporting that the pentagon plans to have four or five US aircraft carriers just off the coast of Iran.
The USS Truman's accompanying Strike Group includes Carrier Air Wing Three (Battle Axe) - which has 7 squadrons - 4 of F/A-18 Super Hornet and F/A-18 Hornet bomber jets, as well as spy planes and early warning E-2 Hawkeyes that can operate in all weather conditions; the Electronic Attack Squadron 130 for disrupting enemy radar systems; and Squadron 7 of helicopters for anti-submarine combat (In its big naval exercise last week, Iran exhibited the Velayat 89 long-range missile for striking US aircraft carriers and Israel warships from Iranian submarines (Debkafile).)
Regarding Debkafile: A couple of days ago I was sent an email that contained a letter for which the writer discredited Debkafile's sources and information as inaccurate and wild speculation. I have found this report to be totally false. I have been using Debkafile as a news source for many years and find it to be accurate most of the time as confirmed by other news sources. I also have a personal friend in the CIA who stated that his organization regularly monitors Debkafile for intelligence gathering purposes. I assume Debkafile speculates on occasion as I do from time to time. This is par for the course when forecasting the direction of where future events might lead.
In other news, the Israel Defense Forces are preparing for what could be an all out missile assault from Hezbollah as soon as this summer. This includes the studying of massive evacuation plans and emergency military scenarios. Next week Israel will put the plan in practice as part of Israel's nationwide Home Front Command exercise.
It is estimated that Hezbollah has over 40,000 rockets and an unspecified number of medium range Scud missiles. Intelligence experts say these Scud missiles have a range that can reach all of Israel, are very accurate, can inflict massive destruction, and can be fitted with chemical warheads. And let's not forget that Hamas has replenished their arsenal and is believed to have into the tens of thousands of rockets ready for launch in Gaza.
According to a top US White House advisor, who has referred to Hezbollah as an 'interesting group', he stated that the US intends to eventually work with the terrorist group. That does not shock me, and frankly, if peace is to come, I have to believe Hamas will in time have to join the mix.
Proximity talks are back on track but both sides have the potential of causing a collapse at any moment. Rumors coming from the Israeli negotiations team are claiming that Abbas spends most of the time complaining against Israel and not working toward peace.
A senior Israeli official told The Jerusalem Post that it appeared Abbas was once again laying the groundwork to scuttle negotiations. In the past, Israel and the Palestinians have on several occasions come close to concluding a final status peace deal, only to have an outbreak of Palestinian violence or new Palestinian hardline demands bring the process to a screeching halt (Israel Today).
US President Barack Obama has declared that he will hold the party responsible that causes a breakdown in the proximity talks. If this allegation is correct and Abbas does cause a breakdown, it will be interesting to see if Obama stays true to his word.
Lastly, fear of a Greek collapse that could spread to other EU nations continues to affect markets not only in the US but around the world. Is this skid just another correction in the market or a relapse into something much worse?
