SHOCK!! Palestinian negotiators have reportedly proposed giving up twice the West Bank territory Abbas offered Olmert
In a shocking move by the Palestinian negotiations team, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that they are willing to give up twice the West Bank territory that Mahmoud Abbas offered former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Palestinian officials told The Wall Street Journal that the unexpected proposal was being made due to their assumption that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not serious about reaching a final status deal within the indirect negotiations.
Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said his government was approaching the proximity talks in good faith and "are not going to waste Mitchell's time.
"We want Mr. Mitchell to succeed because his success is our freedom," he said (Haaretz.com).
In my opinion, this will place a tremendous amount of pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take a step forward of equal or greater significance. Honestly, under no circumstance did I see this move by the Palestinians being made. This, in fact, is a big step in the peace negotiations if it holds true.
In other news, as stated in yesterdays report, the US is building up a major military presence just off the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf. But don't expect an invasion or any type of military action for that matter. It's more of a muscle flexing exercise than anything else. Besides, the US has way too much to lose if they or Israel were to attack Iran:
The U.S. and the European Union fear that Iran would retaliate to any strike by attacking American and NATO forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer and a special adviser to President Barack Obama, told me that in his view Iran could definitely "make life hell" for U.S. troops in the region. An Israeli bombardment would sow instability in the Middle East, rally Sunni-Muslim support for Shi'ite Iran, and endanger the pro-Western regimes in Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bahrain and all the other Arab emirates. An Israeli campaign could also move Iran to block the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow, strategic waterway through which more than one-fourth of the world's oil supplies flow. Even if the American fleet were ultimately to break through the blockade, it would still send oil prices skyrocketing to unprecedented levels - perhaps as high as $200 a barrel. This, in turn, would foment economic chaos worldwide (Haaretz.com).
Certainly, Israel would love to put an end to the Iranian nuclear weapons drama, but even they realize the task maybe to big for them to tackle alone:
"The Iranians have learned the lessons from the attack on the Iraqi reactor," Shafir said. "In Iraq, the entire nuclear program was concentrated in the reactor. The Iranians on the other hand have built a number of nuclear facilities in different areas around the country. Some of them are located in eastern Iran. They have 'hardened' their facilities by building them underground or by placing them in bunkers. In all honesty, the IAF lacks a real strategic capability to bomb distant targets over a prolonged period of time while using the necessary level of firepower (Haaretz.com)."
A word in defense of the George Bush administration and the truth as to why there was never another terrorist attack on US soil after 9/11 during his term:
In recent years, there has been an accelerated flow of intelligence information from Iran that has reached Western agencies. What is most striking about the data is its improving quality. More operatives have been enlisted, the methods of technological information-gathering have been refined, senior scientists and generals have been successfully enticed to defect and shed light on the Iranian nuclear program, and there has been harmonious intelligence cooperation between various agencies on the ground. These bodies are so in synch that they have even begun to jointly operate the same agents (Haaretz.com).
This intelligence harmony was not established under the Obama administration as this article points out, but years before, most likely under the watchful eyes of Vice President Dick Chaney. If this country remains safe, with no successful terrorist strikes, it will be due to the hated tactics of Dick Chaney. If it were up to the liberals, we would be at the mercy of every terrorist organization around the world. Thank you President Bush and Vice President Dick Chaney for standing strong against politicians and advocates who would dare to weaken the US. We are safer today because you refused to waver.
In finacial news, stock markets all over the world continue to get battered on fears over the state of the euro and a spike in US unemployment. Leaders from the US, Britain, and Germany will be meeting in a few weeks in an attempt to restore global confidence in the financial system. Noted economist Nouriel Roubini, told CNBC that stocks will likely shed another 20% before things start to level out. "There are some parts of the global economy that are now at the risk of a double-dip recession," said Roubini, head of Roubini Global Economics. "From here on I see things getting worse (CNBC)."
