Now Israel suggests compromise possible on settlements
US President Barack Obama addressed the UN General Assembly on Thursday with a message to both the Israeli and Palestinian leadership that they should continue to move forward with the direct peace talks.
“This time, we should draw upon the teachings of tolerance that lie at the heart of three great religions that see Jerusalem’s soil as sacred,” Obama continued. “This time, we should reach for what’s best within ourselves.
“If we do, when we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the United Nations – an independent, sovereign state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel,” Obama said to applause from the General Assembly (Jpost.com).
After tireless negotiations, it appears as though the president's peace efforts may be paying off. Israeli officials are now signaling that they may be willing to come to an agreeable compromise that both the US and Palestinians can live with.
Israel on Friday raised the possibility of a compromise on settlement construction just ahead of the scheduled ending of curbs that threatened to derail US-backed Middle East peace talks.
Two days before the conclusion of the 10-month partial moratorium on settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, the government indicated it was willing to cut a deal acceptable to the United States and the Palestinians, who both want an extension of the restrictions.
"Israel is prepared to reach a compromise acceptable to all parties," a senior government official said when asked about US President Barack Obama's call for the moratorium to be extended.
But he also stressed that "there cannot be zero construction" in West Bank settlements (Yahoo.com).
I am leaning toward the settlement freeze to continue unofficially with limited construction. Look for Israeli officials to allow the settlement freeze to expire as is, but limit, delay or reject most of the building permits for an undisclosed amount time. Of course, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may surprise me and officially extend the freeze but I expect it to be more of a veiled settlement freeze.
There's one more important item that should be looked at in light of Bible prophecy. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent a message to Saudi King Abdullah to mark the Saudi national day on Thursday. The message praised the king for his efforts in constructing the Arab Peace Initiative saying it was more important than ever in the success of the direct peace talks. The Arab Peace Initiative offers Israel normalized relations with the Arab world in exchange for their withdrawal from the West Bank territory and the creation of a Palestinian state.
According to Daniel 9:27, it states that Israel will make a covenant with the Antichrist and many nations. I believe the Arab Peace Initiative will play a big part in fulfillment of this prophecy.
