Report: Netanyahu Agrees To Two Month Building Freeze With US Benefits
Is the West Bank settlement building freeze on the verge of renewal? The London-based Arabic-language al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper reported Monday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given his consent in principle to a two-month renewal of the settlement construction moratorium, but has conditioned it by stipulating it would be the last of its kind.
Citing Israeli sources, the paper reported that Netanyahu also asked the US to guarantee Israeli military presence in the Jordan Rift Valley as part of a final peace agreement with the Palestinians.
Other conditions include US military assistance and Washington's assurance that it will use its veto power in the UN Security Council to nip any decision against Israel.
The reports added that Netanyahu asked the Americans to help him deal with the broad political opposition he is likely to face on the matter. The prime minister, said the newspaper, explained to the Americans that he would need a benefits package to show his cabinet, if he is to garner their support for the move (Ynetnews.com).
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday said he recently learned from reliable sources in the US that the Obama Administration is planning to impose a “peace” settlement on Israel and the Palestinians in the coming months.
In a meeting with other members of his Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home) Knesset party, Lieberman warned that US President Barack Obama’s proposal that Israel extend its Jewish building freeze for another two months in exchange for certain diplomatic promises must be rejected by the cabinet.
According to Lieberman, those two months would “give the US and the international community two months to come up with a solution that will be forced on Israel.”
The foreign minister was in the US late last month to address the United Nations General Assembly. During the visit, Lieberman said he “learned that Washington is planning to force a permanent agreement on Israel – two states for two peoples along the 1967 borders, plus-minus 3 or 4% of the territory exchanged.”
Lieberman said the officials he spoke to informed him that if Israel did not accept the imposed peace deal, it would lead to “a confrontation with the international community (Israel Today).”
According to reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed in principle to a two-month extension to the building freeze. US President Barack Obama has attached a number of benefits in exchange for the freeze that Netanyahu can take back to his government pending approval. One request by Netanyahu that stood out was, in the event of an eventual Palestinian state and final peace agreement, the US would allow an Israeli presence in the Jordan Rift Valley.
According to most reports that I have read, it's going to take a miracle to get the two-month extension approved by the Israeli cabinet. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has essentially called it a trap by the Obama administration that would eventually force Israel into an ill-conceived peace plan. He is calling for the Obama plan to be rejected out of hand.
I have to agree with Mr. Lieberman. This seems to be a trap that will place Israel in a no-win situation as we go deeper into peace negotiations.
The Bible says that whoever finally brings peace to the region will obtain that peace and his power through deception (2 Thessalonians. 2: 11).
Are we on the verge of obtaining peace in the Middle East? Will Israel agree to this great deception?
Certainly, these are questions that cannot be answered at this time, but this secret and backdoor agreement makes one wonder what else is on the horizon that we do not know.
Are you ready to meet the Lord? If not, your time is running out!
