'Assad said will press Hamas to recognize Israel'; Israel approves new east Jerusalem homes; Angers Palestinians
Here's a shocking development, according to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, Syrian President Bashar Assad said that he is willing to accept Israel as a Jewish state and will try to convince Hamas to do the same.
This is a major breakthrough if it is true since Syria is seen as a major player in the Middle East peace process. In fact, many believe if Syria were to agree to a peace agreement with Israel it could catapult the rest of the Middle East into doing the same.
Of course, any lip service that Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Palestinians or any other Islamic nation pays toward Israel is nothing more than a fašade to place international pressure on Israel to revert back to pre-1967 borders. You have to wonder if the Islamic world has finally come to the place of agreeing to any lie that will further their cause of ultimately destroying Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signed off on a new surge of building permits that will begin construction on 240 new homes in East Jerusalem. Needless to say, this has angered the Palestinians and has clouded the future of the stalled peace talks. It's hard to say why Mr. Netanyahu has agreed to such a move, but some believe it is a reward to those in his coalition that have agreed to past concessions during the first freeze.
This has led to calls both from Palestinians and the Arab League for the quartet and the UN to declare a Palestinian state unilaterally. France has also been very vocal about the UN declaring a Palestinian state. It is their hope and goal that they will be welcoming a new Palestinian state into the UN by next year.
At this time, Israeli officials are resisting any extension of the building freeze saying that the ten-month freeze was a one-time gesture. The Arab League and much of the international community want Israel to extend it for two more months.
If Syria is willing to acknowledge Israel as a Jewish nation I look for the Palestinians to follow suit. This will force Israel to keep their part of the bargain and to extend the building freeze. Just the other day, a Palestinian official was quoted as saying they would be willing to call Israel whatever they wanted to be called.
It will be interesting to see if both Palestinian and Syrian officials do acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state. It will be a miracle if Syria can persuade Hamas to utter these words. If they do, you know something sinister is brewing.
Frankly, I fully expect Israel to extend the building freeze, especially if they are acknowledged as a Jewish state by their supposed Islamic peace partners. That's not to say that there won't be more bumps in the road as we head toward Palestinian statehood. With Lebanon officially becoming Iran's proxy terrorist state, it's only a matter of time before Israel is completely surrounded by those who openly wish to destroy them.
And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness (Zechariah 12:3-4).
Are you ready to meet the Lord? If not, your time is running out!
