Mideast sides mulling alternatives to peace talks; US leadership in doubt
With peace talks stalled, Israelis and Palestinians are quietly — and separately — looking for alternatives.
The scenarios range from the Palestinians going around Israel to seek world recognition for an independent state to Israel pushing for a scaled-down agreement that sidesteps the toughest issues, like sharing Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees.
The thinking is that few people believe a full peace deal within a year is achievable. And the impasse that has emerged over settlement construction has brought a difficult question to the surface: If the United States cannot compel Israel to extend a settlement freeze for a few months, how can the U.S. persuade Israel to make wrenching decisions over control of Jerusalem?
Both sides claim their first choice is still a full agreement, and the Obama administration is clinging to the hope that the peace talks will succeed (AP).
I have to admit, I find this report a bit surprising yet not shocking. The US seems to have lost the confidence of both the Israeli and Palestinian governments forcing both to seek alternative options. I have always believed that the Bible supports that a leader would rise up out of the European Union (new Roman Empire) and bring peace to the region. At this point, outside of a miracle, the US seems to be fading from the picture.
What I do find shocking is that the consensus is the US is no longer viewed as having the power to pressure Israel into making hard decisions such as extending the settlement freeze for a few months. If they're unable to accomplish this, how are they going to persuade them to make the difficult move of sharing Jerusalem?
The Bible says in Daniel 9:27, that the person who eventually confirms the peace treaty will rise up out of the territory occupied by the old Roman Empire. Most of that territory today makes up the modern day European Union. Some portions also make up some of the Moslem world.
Personally, I believe the Bible supports that the Antichrist will rise up out of the European Union but there are arguments for him also rising up out of one of the Islamic countries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Tzipi Livini are expected to meet in the coming days to discuss a possible merger that would give him the political strength to continue the settlement freeze. Livini's Kadima party favors the creation of a Palestinian state and a peaceful resolution. Netanyahu, with his present coalition, would undoubtedly collapse if he tried to continue the settlement freeze.
With this news, there is a glimmer of hope that a freeze resolution can be worked out and allow direct peace talks to resume in the near future.
I was listening to a well-known prophecy scholar the other day, and he brought up an interesting scenario regarding the rebuilding of the Temple on the Temple Mount that I would like to share with you.
He stated that he believed Israel would eventually be allowed to rebuild their Temple, and based on Scripture, the Islamic world would allow it to be built right next to the Al Aqsa Mosque. With the building of the Temple, he believed a great wall would be placed between the two holy sites. He referenced Revelation 11:1-2 as the basis for his belief:
And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
This court, which is outside the Temple that John was told not to measure, he believes will be given to the Muslim world (gentiles) and separated by a massive wall.
I don't necessarily agree with his theory but do consider it to be an interesting option based on the Scripture he presented. I certainly would not rule it out.
The Al Aqsa Mosque is considered Islam's third holiest site and sits in the center of the Temple Mount.
Are you ready to meet the Lord? If not, your time is running out!
