Olmert: I Will Not Be Deterred In Peace Attempt; Bush Moves Ahead With Plans To Attack Iran
Monday morning, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that he would not be deterred in his attempt to bring peace to Israel and the Palestinian Authority. He stated that Israel had squandered many opportunities in the past and if they did not pursue peace it would mean a continued "demographic struggle steeped in blood and tears."
Although he did not mention Jerusalem, it looks like this time around in the negotiations Israeli leaders are willing to negotiate on the dividing of the holy city. In the past, Jerusalem has been a major sticking point that has stopped and stalled peace negotiations in their tracks, but Prime Minister Olmert is determined to pursue peace with his new supposed peace partner Palestinian Chairman Abbas.
It has always amazed me that the Bible prophesied, that in the last days, Jerusalem would be a burdensome stone to the world (Zechariah 12:3). How true that has become. Even the world looks at Jerusalem as a major obstacle to pushing peace forward. Here is the opening line of an article written today by the Associated Press titled "Israel signals shift on Jerusalem split".

Later on Monday, Palestinian and Israeli negotiators met for the first time to start working on a draft of the joint declaration of principles that would serve as a guide for future peace talks.
And yes, there will be future peace talks that I am convinced will eventually lead to a temporary Middle East peace plan.
I don't believe the US will be the final brokers of this peace accord. At some point in the process, the US will realize that they have gone as far as they can go. That is when the antichrist will step forward to make a seemingly impossible situation a reality.
This may happen when the US changes presidents in January of 2009. Unless real progress is being made I look for the US to move in a different direction in Middle East foreign policy. That is probably when the EU will take center stage and pick up where the US left off...but they will not fail!
Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh says in the October 8 issue of The New Yorker magazine that all signs are pointing toward an eminent attack on Iran. But it won't be against Iran's nuclear facilities as many believe but against "Iranian military elements" that are believed to be a part of the weapons smuggling operation supplying Iraqi militants.
"The revised bombing plan for a possible attack, with its tightened focus on counterterrorism, is gathering support among generals and admirals in the Pentagon," Hersh writes. "The strategy calls for the use of sea-launched cruise missiles and more precisely targeted ground attacks and bombing strikes, including plans to destroy the most important Revolutionary Guard training camps, supply depots, and command and control facilities." http://www.metimes.com/storyview.php?StoryID=20071006-114536-6046r
At this time, the US has three aircraft carriers sitting in the Persian Gulf fully supplied with everything they need to carry out the plan.
A senior European official was quoted to the effect, "We know that the Iranians are strengthening their air-defense capabilities and we believe they will react asymmetrically - hitting targets in Europe and Latin America." There is also intelligence suggesting that Iran will be aided in these attacks by Hezbollah. It should be noted that US President Bush has not as of yet signed an executive order to carry out this operation.
How much truth there is to this report is unknown. Only time will tell.
