Syria Rejects Annapolis Invite, But Could Still Come If US Includes Golan Heights In Summit Papers

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Tuesday that Israel was ready to go far at the Annapolis ME peace summit scheduled for the last week in November (26th).  But they made it clear that they were not willing to turn over the West Bank to just anyone.  Israel is worried that once they leave the West Bank it will turn into a terrorist state as Gaza did.

Their fears are well founded, and eventually, that's exactly what the West Bank will become.  The UN has been unable to keep Hezbollah from regrouping (stronger than ever) in southern Lebanon why would it be any different in the West Bank.

Getting back to the summit...Israel and the US were hoping that Syria would decide to attend the peace summit.  In fact, sources are saying that the US is considering including the Golan Heights in the Annapolis peace conference agenda.  Here is what Debkafile reported today:

"Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert and defense minister Ehud Barak made welcoming sounds about Syria’s possible presence at the conference, as though they had come up with the plan after careful consideration. In fact, DEBKAfile’s Middle East and intelligence sources report, US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice presented them with a fait accompli.

The invitation she handed to Syrian foreign minister Walid Mualem on Nov. 3 came from President George W. Bush, after he accepted Damascus’ condition that future negotiations on the Golan be mentioned in the conference’s final paper, as well as the Palestinian issue.

Rice and Mualem initially agreed that the Golan talks between Israel and Syria would be delayed for a while so as not to interfere with the Palestinian track. It will also be necessary to prepare Israeli opinion for the step. But Tuesday, after winning one point, Damascus raised the ante.

Syrian deputy prime minister Abdullah Dardari announced that if the restoration of the Golan to Syrian hands is not laid out at the peace conference, Syria will not attend. His statement aimed at pinning Rice down to making Israel go along with the deal, or risk being accused of derailing the conference.

The Syrians are demanding furthermore that their delegate, possibly vice president Farouk a-Shara, or Moualem, be given the floor for a speech calling for the handover of the Golan which Israel has controlled since Syria was defeated in the 1967 War."  http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=4752

At this time, Syria has decided not to get involved in the peace summit unless the return of the Golan Heights becomes a part of the peace initiative papers.  I have a feeling that in the coming weeks their demands will be met whether Israel likes it or not.

It's becoming evident that Israel is now being dictated to by the US rather than making rational hard-nosed decisions of their own.  Hopefully, they will come to their senses as the summit draws near.

But the US has a few worries on its own doorstep.  It has come to light that both Hamas and Hezbollah may be setting up shop in Mexico.  Middle East online news magazine Israel Today reported this today:

"Washington believes the Palestinian terror group Hamas and the Iranian-backed Lebanese terrorist militia Hizballah are looking to set up operations in Mexico with the aim of eventually infiltrating the United States, according to a former CIA counter-terrorism official.

Robert Grenier, who until recently was head of the CIA's counter-terrorism center, told a press conference in Mexico last Thursday that the Muslim terrorist organizations see the illegal immigration and drug trafficking networks in the Latin American nation as the most effective way to move people and equipment into the US.

Grenier said that the Bush Administration fears both Hamas and Hizballah may already have sleeper cells operating in Mexico.

Hamas and Hizballah have both threatened in the past to extend their war against Israel to include the United States."  http://www.israeltoday.co.il/default.aspx?tabid=178&nid=14470

Border patrol officials have already confirmed that there have been numerous attempts by terrorists trying to enter the US every month. Once the US pulls out of Iraq that number will rise dramatically.  When the war ends look for most of these terrorist militants to latch on to Hamas and Hezbollah.  Many will stay in the region while others will take the fight to the US by way of Mexico and Canada.

If you are one of those who believes once the US leaves Iraq they will be leaving Middle East terrorism behind... don't kid yourself!

Are you ready to meet the Lord?  If not, your time is running out!
