What Could Happen In Prophecy Over The Next 12-18 Months

Today, US President Bush, kicked off the much anticipated Middle East peace summit in Annapolis, Maryland.  During the summit, the president announced that both Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas agreed on the statutes of a document that would lead them in the course of negotiations over the next 12 months.  The document does not mention specifics but will serve as a guide that will direct them in eliminating obstacles that have prevented peace in the past.

President Bush had this to say about the progress and purpose of the peace summit:

"Today, Palestinians and Israelis each understand that helping the other to realize their aspirations is the key to realizing their own -- and both require an independent, democratic, viable Palestinian state," Bush said, explaining that a two-state solution is the path to peace for both nations.

"Our purpose here in Annapolis is not to conclude an agreement. Rather, it is to launch negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians," he said. "For the rest of us, our job is to encourage the parties in this effort -- and to give them the support they need to succeed."  CNN

There is no question that today is a new chapter in Bible prophecy and could very well be the start of the birth pangs mentioned in Matthew chapter 24.  Many would say that the birth pangs have already started, and I would be inclined to agree, but I look for them to intensify over the next 12 to 18 months.

The question is, are we on the verge of seeing the long-awaited peace accord come to pass as described in Daniel 9:27?  And will President Bush be the person who brings it into reality?

If you read my last commentary you know that I believe there are several biblical sticking points that disqualify President Bush from being the leader who ultimately confirms a peace agreement with Israel.  One, I hold to the view that the antichrist will ultimately rise up out the European Union.  Certainly, this is not my own private interpretation but a commonly held belief by most Bible believing scholars.  The keyword being "Bible believing".  Meaning...when in doubt, go with those who you know are in touch with God.  The qualifications beginning with an active Christian lifestyle whose main purpose is to see souls saved.  Those are the people God reveals truth to and not some liberal scholar whose never won anyone to the Lord.

Second sticking point, the Bible is clear that once the covenant has been confirmed for one week (seven years) he (antichrist) will break it 3 1/2 years later (Daniel 9:27).  As it stands right now, barring a miracle from God, President Bush will not be able to fulfill this half of the prophecy due to term limits.

So where does this peace conference go from here?

First of all, I don't think there's any doubt that this is the future peace accord that Israel will ultimately sign with the antichrist.  Eventually, this person will come on the scene, bring peace followed by war.  He will declare himself to be God and demand worship, and no earthly power will be able to stand in his way.  For he will have the power of satan, and for a time, the blessing of God.

So who is this man?  At this point, I don't believe anyone knows, but I think we can say with confidence he is alive today and not far from being revealed (II Thessalonians 2:1-10).

To try and bring a little clarity to the present situation here are two alternate theories I didn't invent but believe make a lot of sense.

Let's say President Bush does bring peace to the Palestinians and Israelis.  Through concessions, the Palestinians would gain virtually all the West Bank and East Jerusalem along with the holy sites ( Temple Mount).  It's also looking like the Syrians may regain the Golan Heights as well.

Through this peace accord, President Bush will gain commitments from the Palestinian and participating Arab governments to bring about stability and normalization with Israel.

But if this peace accord is successfully accomplished before President Bush leaves office I believe it could be the time of peace and safety described in Ezekiel 38:1-14:

[1] And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
[2] Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
[3] And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
[4] And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
[5] Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
[6] Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.
[7] Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
[8] After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
[9] Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.
[10] Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
[11] And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
[12] To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
[13] Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?
[14] Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?

As you can see, this passage speaks of a time when Israel (in the last days) will be living peacefully and dwelling in their own land safely (v. 8, 11 & 14).  This passage has not been fulfilled as of this date but could very shortly.

In the midst of peace, the Bible says a group of Islamic nations led by Russia and Iran will converge upon Israel in a major sneak attack as a great storm (v. 9).  But in the end, they will be miraculously and soundly defeated (83% of this army will die) leaving the world trembling in fear before Almighty God.

Here is the point where the theory could take two different roads.  Road one: Following this great and miraculous defeat the antichrist comes forward out of the European Union and restores order to the Middle East.  He then confirms or strengthens the covenant President Bush had left in the care of the next US administration.  I will assume that some alterations will have to be made to this plan since at some point Israel will have to rebuild their Temple.  It's also possible that the antichrist could invite Israel to become a part of the European Union.

Road two:  Following this great and miraculous defeat, Israel will take the next seven years to burn the weapons of the invaders (Ezekiel 39:9).  They will go on to gain back all the land they lost through concessions (and more) and rebuild the Temple.  The world will see them as a great military power and some will seek to align themselves with Israel.  In the passage of time, the antichrist will arise and confirm a peace treaty with Israel.  It will be for seven years but whether the timeframe will be specified in the peace document is unknown.

Of course, no one knows the specifics of what will truly transpire in the future.

The road map could fall into collapse just as the others, but at some point, it will succeed.

The attack on Israel by the Russian-Islamic Alliance may take place before or after the rapture or during the tribulation period...but whenever it takes place, it will be during a time of peace and safety for Israel.

Wherever this roadmap leads, the next 12 months look to be a very volatile and exciting time for Bible prophecy.

Are you ready to meet the Lord?  If not, your time is running out!
