US Downgrades Iranian Threat; Israel Intel Despites US Findings
According to a recent US intelligence report, in response to world pressure, Iran ceased developing their nuclear program back in 2003 but was still enriching uranium. US President Bush is calling for further sanctions and for Iran to lay all of its nuclear ambition cards on the table.
This report has stunned experts around the world and especially Israel. They have come out and publicly questioned the report calling it inconsistent with their intel.
This report, although shocking, is not surprising. President Bush has two objectives for the coming year. Number one, he wants to insure peace becomes a reality before he leaves office. A strike against Iran would only make that reality more difficult if not impossible. Number two, he's not going to start a third war especially with the primaries and elections in the coming year. That would be suicidal for the Republican Party.
Don't look for President Bush to rock the boat any further in the Middle East. He's looking to get in, bring peace, and get out. What happens after that he's really not that concerned with.
With this so-called good report, President Bush has become an international laughingstock. Certainly now the word around the international community is he was wrong about Iran, therefore, he must have been wrong about Iraq.
President Bush aside, the truth is, we will one day wake up to a nuclear Iran despite this so-called intel report. The truth is, if they would have been permitted to play out their nuclear ambitions, we would have one day woken up to the same reality in Iraq. Soon, we'll see firsthand if I'm correct about Iran.
The elections in Russia are over but reports of corruption and heavy-handedness are rampant. President Putin's political party, United Russia, has come out victorious in a landslide leading many to believe this was the first step back toward the old Soviet empire.

There is no question in my mind that Russia is heading back to the return of an old Soviet style government... and I don't foresee President Putin stepping down from a position of power anytime soon. Yes, he may give up his seat as president but he will still rule.
What do I see for the future? I see the US pulling back from Israel as we draw closer to the end of 2008. Israel will still be on President Bush's favored nation's list but only for the sake of peace. He would not be above selling them out if things do not work out as he plans.
If peace is not established by the end of 2008, look for the US to shelve the plan and for the EU to eventually rekindle it and make it a reality. Whether this will be months or years down the road is anyone's guess.
