Olmert downplays US betrayal on Iranian nuclear program; Tells Israeli officials to stop bringing it up

After Israeli and US officials met to sort out their differences on where they perceive the Iranian nuclear program is heading, Israel says they don't necessarily disagree with the US analysis but that they (US) have elected to interpret it a different way.  It's quite evident that the US is no longer interested in holding Iran accountable militarily and have chosen to take the available intelligence at face value and no more.

"Israeli intelligence does not know for certain that Iran renewed its attempt to develop a weapon, i.e. the bomb itself, after it froze the program in 2003. But sources are saying that if Iran restarted its efforts in the winter of 2005/2006 to convert uranium into gas (for enrichment purposes) as well as its uranium enrichment purposes – then it is reasonable to assume that the weapons development program was also reactivated."

"The fact that we do not know for certain that this was done, say sources within the defense establishment, indicates only that we do not know enough – and that Iran's attempts at concealment are effective; we must, therefore, work harder. On the contrary, the American intelligence community, after learning a bitter lesson from its experience with Iraq, is taking a stance marked by meticulousness and caution: we posses information that the Iranians did not renew attempts to develop a bomb, therefore – given the absence of solid material proving the opposite – we believe what the information we have."  YNETnews.COM

Despite criticism from Israeli officials for what they have called a US betrayal, both Prime Minister Olmert and Foreign Minister Livini are downplaying the rift and have instructed government officials to change the subject.  This all for the sake of Middle East peace.

Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, got a much needed boost to the Palestinian economy today at the international donor conference that raise $7.4 billion.  More than 60 countries and international organizations pledged their continued support for the Palestinian state over the next three and half years.

At the donor conference, President Abbas took the opportunity to criticize Israel for continued settlement building in parts of Jerusalem he believes will be a part of the future Palestinian capital.

Israeli Foreign Minister Livni, took the time to reinforce the need for the Palestinian Authority to begin taking steps to fight terrorism but indicated that it was agreed at the Annapolis summit that this important step in the road map plan would not derail peace talks from going forward.

"The Road Map states that a reform [in the PA leadership] and an end to terrorism are pre-conditions for political negotiations.  This is still valid. However, we and our Palestinian partners agreed that the two nations deserve a more solid vision, and that true peace can be attained only if we create the basic conditions for it to strike roots... We therefore decided to begin final-status talks already now, parallel to the practical implementation of the Road Map."

"It is enticing to get into mutual recriminations or to find reasons to stop the talks, but we must rise above all this... The situation in which Hamas has taken over Gaza and brings terrorism to Israeli homes every day along with hardships for the Palestinian population, while Gilad Shalit is still a captive, is very disturbing for us.  The wantonness, the incitement, the arms-smuggling and the terrorism have not ceased.  All this can be a great excuse for doing nothing - but our decision not to give in to them must be even stronger." United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, also tried to make a plea for the world body to come to the rescue of a struggling Hamas controlled Gaza. He said that without a new infusion of emergency humanitarian aid they were on the brink of complete and utter disaster.  But Ban's plea fell on deaf ears with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who told reporters that "Hamas' anti-Israel policies and support for and practice of terrorism are the direct cause of the situation in Gaza".  Israel Today

On Saturday, 300,000 Palestinians rallied in Gaza to celebrate the Hamas movement's 20th anniversary. At the celebration, Hamas vowed never to recognize Israel and that whoever declares he will never recognize Israel earns "the people's love." The crowd chanted: "We will never recognize Israel."  Haaretz

Hamas had been hoping to get a dialogue with the West and to reopen talks with Fatah but that seems to have fallen through given the announcement at the donor conference by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas that he would not be seeking reconciliation with Hamas.

That is bad news for Hamas who is quickly heading toward financial collapse and in much need of Mr. Abbas' newly acquired support.  I have to believe that this money was given under the condition that he would not seek reconciliation with Hamas.

I'm not sure how far Hamas is willing to take their hatred toward Israel, but don't be surprised if, for the sake of survival, they begin to change their policies toward them...at least openly.  Hamas, nor Fatah, will ever change their ultimate goal, but for the sake of the world supporting their mission, they will keep their true feelings hidden.  It'll just take Hamas a little more time to come around to this thinking, but eventually, I think they will or risk world isolation and possibly extinction.

This overwhelming infusion of financial support for Mr. Abbas leads me to believe that the world is squarely behind and dead serious about bringing into reality a Palestinian state by December of 2008.

Is this the peace plan the Bible predicted would come to Israel?  Are Christians on the verge of being raptured from this world?

Are you ready to meet the Lord?  If not, your time is running out!
