Jerusalem Readies For Bush's Arrival; Israel, PA seek 'positive atmosphere'
Haniyeh
calls on Sarkozy to help resolve Mideast crisis
Dismissed Hamas
Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh on Sunday called on France to come to the aid of
Palestinians, saying he welcomed "all international efforts" aimed at
improving regional security.
In a long letter to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Haniyeh said the Hamas-run government in the Gaza Strip is "prepared to cooperate with all international efforts to establish security and stability in the region."
Last month another Hamas spokesman slammed Sarkozy's call for an international peacekeeping force in the Palestinian territories, made at an international donors conference in Paris, aimed at aiding the Palestinians.
But in Sunday's letter, Haniyeh praised Sarkozy's address, saying he had put forward some "positive and encouraging initiatives" at the conference.
"We followed your speech at the recent Paris conference in which we found many positive and encouraging initiatives aimed at ending the occupation and restoring the legal rights of the Palestinian people and ending their suffering."
The former prime minister also said he would welcome a French role in resolving the factional struggle with his Fatah party rivals that has embroiled the Palestinian territories in recent months.
Haniyeh nevertheless again criticized the current round of peace talks between Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, which the Islamist movement has always rejected.
Comment: Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh's acceptance of international troops in the Middle East is a big turnabout by a Hamas leader and could lead to an acceleration in the peace process.
Certainly, it is for the sole purpose of gaining international financial support, but it definitely shows Hamas' willingness to compromise. I look for them to eventually pay lip service to the prospect of peace with Israel for the sake of international support. They may have to go to the edge of financial ruin before they come to this realization but I believe it will happen. Switzerland claims that they are mediating talks between Israel and Hamas regarding a long-term cease-fire (10 years).
I find it odd, that out of all the world leaders, Hamas is calling on French President Nicolas Sarkozy to come to their rescue. This could play in his favor as a future Middle East peace power broker.
I would definitely keep my eye on him as a person of prophetic interest as we draw closer to the last days. It wouldn't shock me if he began to rise very quickly in the M.E. peace process, even to the point of taking a lead role, once President Bush vacates the scene.
Israel,
PA seek 'positive atmosphere'
Both Israel and the Palestinian Authority are trying to create a
"positive atmosphere" before US President George W. Bush's visit
Wednesday and are expected to announce a framework for negotiations before he
lands, government officials said Sunday.
According to the officials, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is scheduled to meet Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qurei on Monday for the fourth time since the Annapolis conference to try to hammer out a framework for negotiations. This meeting is expected to be followed by another on Tuesday between Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and PA President Mahmoud Abbas. The two leaders last met 11 days ago.
Comment: Everyone will be all smiles for President Bush's first visit to the Middle East as he takes a hands-on approach in his attempt to bring peace to the region. I believe he will make significant progress in negotiations with his Middle East partners and likely will follow up with another meeting sometime in the spring.
The big question is, will he achieve peace during his tenure? I don't believe the Bible supports this happening only because President Bush would only be able to bring (start) peace. Bible prophecy is clear that the same person who brings peace will also break it 3 1/2 years later ( Daniel 9:27). But he will take it further than any previous U.S. president has before he lays down the mantle.
