Bush Arrives, all smiles,
but collision over Jerusalem building, Iran looms
George W. Bush arrived in Israel for his first visit to the country as
President , and the Israeli government rolled out the red carpet and jostled to
shake his hand in a receiving line at the airport before the President headed
off in his helicopter to Jerusalem.
Despite the festive welcome, difficult talks lay ahead, after Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice threw down the gauntlet by stating that building in Har Homa
was unacceptable, and rejecting the distinction between Israeli communities over
the "green line" in Jerusalem versus those in Judea and Samaria (the
"West Bank"). Israeli PM Olmert and President Peres made sure to
remind Bush of Israel's extreme concern with Iranian nuclear plans.
Sarkozy seen as backing Blair for top EU job
Former UK prime minister Tony Blair will attend a conference
of French president Nicolas Sarkozy's centre-right party UMP on Saturday (12
January), in what is said to be his first intervention for a party other than
his own.
The move is fuelling speculation that Mr Blair, who belongs to the UK's
center-left Labour party, is in the running for EU president – a new
high-profile job that can be held for up to five years starting in 2009.
The two men will debate Europe and Mr Blair may get clear backing from Mr
Sarkozy in exchange of his participation at the conference, according to media
reports.
Comments: President Bush is in Israel today in an attempt to push peace along in the region.
Both Israeli Prime Minister Olmert and Palestinian leader Abbas have agreed to negotiate on the status of dividing Jerusalem, but Olmert made it clear that there were non- negotiable red lines that Israel would not cross. Whether that will continue to be the case as negotiations progress is another thing.
Personally, I believe, as Olmert leads Israel deeper and deeper into negotiations, the international pressure for him to continue to give in to concessions will be tremendous. It may even come to the point of threats of international sanctions if Israel fails to comply.
According to the Jerusalem Post, they will begin negotiations on core issues immediately:
"Israeli and Palestinian negotiating teams will be instructed to start talking about core issues such as Jerusalem, the refugees and the contours of a future Palestinian state, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas decided after a meeting in Jerusalem Tuesday."
"The two leaders decided to allow negotiating teams to conduct direct talks on all core issues," Olmert's spokesman Mark Regev said. "We expect that the process will begin shortly." Jerusalem Post
Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been invited to attend a conference by French President Nicolas Sarkozy's centre-right party UMP on Saturday. Rumor has it that Mr. Sarkozy's party will endorse Mr. Blair for president of the European Union. The first EU president is slated to take office in early 2009.
Keep an eye on both Sarkozy and Blair in the future months ahead. I consider both of these individuals to be of prophetic significance in these last days.
