IDF: Air Force jets aren't training in Iraq; ...Night Drills Said To Be Massive

A summit on Sunday to launch French President Nicolas Sarkozy's vision of North African-European harmony, called the "Union of the Mediterranean," promises to be a colorful show: Some 40 leaders from states around a sea that borders three continents will be in Paris to talk about integrating a vast and diverse region better known for clashing and squabbling.

Still, under the translucent dome of the Grand Palais, France will host elected heads of state, Maghreb autocrats, Arabs and Israelis, Christians and Muslims, Moroccan and Balkan diplomats – in pursuit of a north-south stability that is viewed with a fair share of skepticism by most participants, who feel they need to be there anyway.

It's quite a cast, with a long history of grievance and dispute: Algeria's Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Syria's Bashar al-Assad will attend along with Israel's Ehud Olmert. Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who doesn't want to participate in lieu of Turkish EU membership, finally agreed this week to come. Libya's Muammar Qaddafi, warning of colonial put-downs from Europe and of Israeli normalization of relations with the EU, is the lone holdout. Tellingly, perhaps, there are no plans for a final photograph.

Indeed, Sarkozy's initial vision, articulated in Toulouse when he was still a presidential candidate, was positively interstellar in scale. France would gain good grace in its old sphere of influence and earnestly shape a new world of cooperation and commercial exchange ranging from banking and universities to the environment and trade, common energy, and antiterrorism. It would be a new paradise connecting Paris and the Maghreb.  The Christian Science Monitor

Iran's missile test this week demonstrated no new capabilities, according to a US official familiar with the intelligence, and the test may not have included one of the longer-range missiles that Iran said was among those launched.

Iranian officials said the tests Wednesday and Thursday demonstrated a new variant of the Shahab missile with a range of 2,012 kilometers. Such a missile would put much of the Middle East in striking distance, including Israel, 1,045 km from Iran, as well as Turkey, Pakistan and the Arabian peninsula.

The tests drew immediate criticism from US officials. In Eastern Europe when the launches occurred, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the missile tests underscored the need for a US defensive missile system in the region.

But an independent national security blog, ArmsControlWonk.com, analyzed on Thursday video footage of the launch posted by the Iranian government. It determined the missiles were identical to a version of the Shahab missile first demonstrated in Iran in 1998 that has a known range of 1,200 km.

In a posting called "Same old Boring Shahab 3," it compared the diameter of the missile to its length and found it to be identical to the 1998 version.  Jerusalem Post

Israel Air Force (IAF) war planes are training in the airspace of Iraq and landing in US airbases there in preparation for a potential strike on Iran, sources in the Iraqi Defense Ministry told a local news network Friday.

The report, picked up by Iranian news outlets, claimed that massive nocturnal activity by IAF aircraft has been observed in several American airbases in Iraq, accompanied by increased perimeter security by the US army around the bases.

The IDF Spokesperson's Office said the Iraqi reports were "unfounded."

According to the Iraqi sources, former military officers in the Anbar province said IAF jets arrive during the night through Jordanian airspace, enter Iraq's airspace and land on a runway near the city of Hadita. The sources speculate that the jets have been practicing for a raid on Iran's nuclear sites.

The sources also suggested that the US bases in Iraq might serve as a platform for the IAF to attack Iran, reducing risks and time to reach Iranian targets to several minutes.  Israelinsider
