Olmert to Obama: By late 2009, early 2010 Iran will be able to assemble nuclear bomb

Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert told visiting US Senator Barack Obama Wednesday night, July 23 that within little more than a year, Iran would be able to assemble all the components for a nuclear bomb. He said the international penalties to force Iran to give up its nuclear plans must be speeded up without removing the military option from the table.

Earlier, senior Israeli defense sources reported that Iran is set to receive Russian S-300 anti-air missiles for fighting off strikes against its nuclear facilities by early September, seriously complicating any air attack.

DEBKAfile’s military sources note that this was the second statement in four days by Israeli security sources, stressing the need for expeditious action to preempt Iran’s military nuclear progress.

It is not by chance that this latest statement coincided with the visit by the Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. He spoke in general about his commitments on Iran if he wins the race to the White House. This second Israeli statement indicated a specific time frame for action.

The Israeli sources, who refused to be named, said the first delivery of S-300 missile batteries was expected as soon as early September, weeks away, and could take six-to 12 months to be deployed and made operable.

“There is no doubt,” he said, “that the S-300s would make an air attack more difficult.

One of the purposes of the Israeli air force drill over the Mediterranean last month, widely seen as a dress rehearsal for a possible raid on Iran, was to practice passes against the S-300 batteries which Greece acquired from Russia via Cyprus.  Debkafile

European Union foreign ministers on Tuesday called for further diplomacy in dealing with concerns over Iran's nuclear programme and ruled out a military strike as an option. The EU's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, says there is "no other route" apart from diplomacy. EUobserver

Russia would cross "a red line for the United States of America" if it were to base nuclear capable bombers in Cuba, a top US air force officer warned on Tuesday.

"If they did I think we should stand strong and indicate that is something that crosses a threshold, crosses a red line for the United States of America," said General Norton Schwartz, nominated to be the air force's chief of staff.

He was referring to a Russian news report that said the military is thinking of flying long-range bombers to Cuba on a regular basis.

It was unclear from the report whether that would involve permanent basing of nuclear bombers in Cuba, or just use of the island as a refueling stop.  Breitbart.com

Analysis
With US presidential hopeful Barak Obama visiting in the Middle East, today in Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert disclosed that Iran could have all the pieces to the nuclear puzzle by September of 2009.  This in an attempt to likely persuade Mr. Obama of the urgency for diplomacy to work or to undergo a military option.  My estimation is that Prime Minister Olmert's words fell on deaf ears.  It is highly unlikely that Barak Obama, if elected president, will allow Israel, and certainly not the US, to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities.  Iran is banking on this, but they are still taking delivery of Russian S-300 anti-air missiles just in case President Bush gets the itch.  What makes matters worse is that EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solena, has essentially taken the military option off the table.  No wonder Iran is unwilling to put a halt to their nuclear ambitions.

In the Western Hemisphere, General Norton Schwartz, nominated to be the air force's chief of staff, has sent out a warning to Russia not to get too comfortable in Cuba.  He is speaking in regards to their recent presence in Cuba with nuclear capable bombers.

Given the present post Cold War regime ruling Russia, this is a very dangerous situation that I don't see the US backing down on.  This is likely designed to send a message to the US administration that two can play this game.  Over the last number of years, the US has been courting former Soviet block nations and neighbors to be a part of a massive US missile shield in Europe.  Russia has threatened that they will not take this lying down.

I would certainly not take this recent message by Russia to the US lightly.
