Syrian US ambassador: Let's make peace; Assad confidante Imad Mustafa says talks are "historic opportunity" for peace with entire Arab world
"Here's the grand thing on offer: Let us sit together, let us make peace, let us end once and for all the state of war," said Syrian Ambassador to the US Imad Mustafa in a recorded statement aired by Army Radio on Monday .
Mustafa is considered a senior diplomat and close confidante of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Mustafa made the dovish statements in an interview he gave to Americans for Peace Now, an organization affiliated with the left-wing organization Peace Now.
Mustafa said the current Turkish-mediated talks were an "historic opportunity" for Israel to make peace not only with Syria, but also with the rest of the Arab world.
"We desire to end the state of war between us...and to recognize each other, live as neighbors," Mustafa is heard in the interview as saying. The ambassador to the US was a personal, hand-picked nomination of Assad. Jerusalem Post
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Monday he does not believe his government and the Palestinian leadership will be able to achieve their stated goal of a forging a peace deal by the end of the year. FOX News
Monday, July 28, Israel’s defense minister Ehud Barak is due to land with both feet at the heart of the controversy with the US defense secretary Robert Gates over the wisdom of a pre-emptive attack on Iran’s nuclear weapons projects before it is too late.
American coordination with any Israeli strike plan would be contingent on Gates’ review and approval. However, DEBKAfile’s Washington sources report that, as Barak prepared to fly out, the Israeli defense ministry spokesman said he would be meeting vice president Dick Cheney, secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, senior military officials and members of Congress. Gates’ name was not on the agenda.
Jerusalem has not commented on these omissions, but the message has registered that Gates is so adamantly opposed to any military action against Iran, that he has decided not even to look at any Israeli plans of action.
Another cause of Israel’s concern is the Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama’s praise for Gates’ position on Iran. Debkafile

Now, that Israeli peace with the Arab world was within their grasp and a
"historic opportunity". There is no question that this is an
historic opportunity, and more importantly, a precursor to prophetic
fulfillment. This peace will come, although, I
don't expect it in 2008. Right now, US Secretary of State Condoleezza
Rice, is pressing hard for both the Israelis and the Palestinians to have some
type of peace understanding written down on paper and assigned before President
Bush leaves office in January 2009. It's possible that some type of loose
agreement and understanding could be signed and left for the next administration
to confirm and make strong (Daniel 9:27). Whether it will be the US or the
European Union ( which I believe the Bible supports) who will pick up, confirm
and make strong this agreement will be interesting to see. Of course, by
the time we get to the point of confirmation and strengthening of a Middle East
peace plan the rapture of the church will have already taken place. Does
that mean we are on the verge of the rapture taking place? The rapture
could take place at any moment, but that doesn't necessarily mean that peace is
around the corner. There is no question in my mind that peace will come,
and I believe soon, but many things can happen between now and the actual day it
finally does takes place. But today marks another day that we are one day
closer to that reality.
