Iran said to have enough nuclear fuel for one weapon; Does this mean it's too late?
According to a New York Times report, "Iran has now produced roughly enough nuclear material to make, with added purification, a single atom bomb, according to nuclear experts." JPost.com
"The figures detailing Iran's progress were contained in a routine update on Wednesday from the International Atomic Energy Agency, which has been conducting inspections of the country's main nuclear plant at Natanz. The report concluded that as of early this month, Iran had made 630 kilograms, or about 1,390 pounds, of low-enriched uranium." JPost.com
"They clearly have enough material for a bomb," said Richard Garwin, a top nuclear physicist who helped invent the hydrogen bomb and has advised Washington for decades. "They know how to do the enrichment. Whether they know how to design a bomb, well, that's another matter." International Herald Tribune
But according to experts, this is not a problem since low-enriched uranium is specifically made for use in nuclear power plants. It would have to be further purified to be made into weapons grade uranium requiring the revamping of the Russian built Natanz facilities.
At the present time, the Natanz facilities would have to go through some major visible reconstruction in order to produce the weapons grade uranium necessary to create a nuclear warhead. That is, if Iran doesn't have other hidden underground facilities that would perform the purification of the uranium.
Certainly, it would not be at all shocking if Iran was using the Natanz facilities as a visible decoy (inspection site for the IAEA) to produce low-enriched uranium while further purifying the uranium elsewhere.
At this time, despite the evidence that only low-enriched uranium is being produced, many in the international community are still skeptical of Iran's claim that they are only producing uranium for the purpose of peaceful, domestic means. But will they do anything other than talk.
The dilemma for Israel, can Israel afford to wait on the world to solve this problem through sanctions and dead end negotiations that just don't seem to be working? With both Russia and China refusing to further punish Iran for noncompliance, a peaceful conclusion seems dim. Personally, I wouldn't rule them out as significant partners in Iran's elaborate scheme.
Barring a miracle from (will of) God, I would have to say that an attack is imminent.
