Three Israelis killed by Palestinian missiles, crucial Gaza invasion ready to go; Natural disasters 'killed over 220,000' in 2008

Natural disasters killed over 220,000 people in 2008, making it one of the most devastating year on record and underlining the need for a global climate deal, the world's number two reinsurer said Monday.

Although the number of natural disasters was lower than in 2007, the catastrophes that occurred proved to be more destructive in terms of the number of victims and the financial cost of the damage caused, Germany-based Munich Re said in its annual assessment.

"This continues the long-term trend we have been observing."  AFP

Analysis
With a thundering Israeli air attack under way and the threat of a possible ground attack commencing at any moment, Middle East peace is far from reality.  For most Christians, this is one of many disruptions that has continuously interrupted the rapture of the church and the start of the tribulation period.  It is also an example of why we will never be able to know the day or hour of the Lord's rapture... although we know it is near.

One thing this war has accomplished is that it has pushed Middle East peace to the top of the priority list for incoming US president Barack Obama.  It will be interesting to see what direction he takes in his attempt to secure peace throughout the region.  Or will he pass it on to his European counterpart?

With the Israeli strike dominating most prophecy news media outlets, little attention has been given to a recent global report indicating that 2008 was the most devastating year on record for natural disasters.  Actually, 2007 had more natural disasters but the disasters of 2008 claimed more lives.  According to a Germany-based research institution "This continues the long-term trend we have been observing."  AFP  I suspect it will get worse as the years go by.

This is proof positive that another major Bible prophecy is beginning to be fulfilled (Matthew 24:7-8).  In my opinion, this would have little significance without taking place after the rebirth of Israel, the recapturing of Jerusalem, and the world's attempt at bringing peace to the Middle East.  It should also be mentioned that two nations from the East (and only the East) now have the capability of fielding an army of 200 million soldiers as predicted in Revelation 9:16.  The latter prophecy will come to fruition during the tribulation period.

As far as the Israeli incursion into Gaza is concerned?  It will be interesting to see what the global outcry will be if this military action continues for another several weeks.  The fact that Israel is experiencing limited international condemnation (compared to previous wars) may be a signal to some degree that Hamas has finally worn out its welcome.
