Iran sets terms for U.S. ties; Israel not happy about possible new US/Iran relationship
Israeli army Home Front Command Major General Yair Golan said
Sunday that Tel Aviv is preparing for "all possible scenarios",
indicating that one such scenario would be to fight a simultaneous war against
Iran, Syria and Lebanon.
The confirmation comes as US President Barack Obama seeks "new
beginnings" with its arch-rival Iran. The US offer has been met with world
praise but with fury in Tel Aviv. Press

Iran has responded to U.S. President Barack Obama's offer of better relations by demanding policy changes from Washington, but the Islamic state is not closing the door to a possible thaw in ties with its old foe.
Iran wants the United States to show concrete change in its behavior toward it, for example by handing back frozen assets, but Tehran is not pursuing "eternal hostility," said Professor Mohammad Marandi at Tehran University.
"I think they (the Iranian leadership) are quite willing to have better relations if the Americans are serious," said Marandi, who heads North American studies at the university. Reuters
The US looks to be trying to bridge a gap between itself and Iran in the process of angering Israel. In fact, it almost sounds like Iran is calling the shots in the US's attempt to mend their relationship.
A new US intelligence report contradicts the belief that Iran could indeed have a nuclear weapon by the end of the year or early 2010. Although they admit Iran is making progress there estimation is that it will be no sooner than 2013. They also conclude, due to a lack of concrete information, that Iran is still somewhat undecided as to whether they will pursue nuclear weapons but reserve the right to do so if they choose. Apparently, this is just another US attempt at trying to put a better face on the Iranian nuclear project.
At the same time, Israel is in the process of preparing for "all possible scenarios", which includes a simultaneous war between Iran, Lebanon, and Syria. The main problem still seems to be time. Israel still doesn't know whether Iran has taken delivery of the Russian S-300 antimissile batteries or the even more sophisticated S-300PMU-2. The latter is a "highly mobile system, capable of intercepting low-altitude cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and high-altitude bombers. It can engage targets from altitudes as low as 30 feet up to 90,000 feet, and from a range of inside of 3 miles out to 95 miles." The Cutting Edge If Iran is in possession of this system it would make it that much more difficult for Israel to be successful in destroying or slowing down Iran's nuclear program. The Israeli consensus is, they will have to make a move soon before Iran deploys these batteries in key areas.
